Exploring advance care planning discourses in scottish dementia policies: A critical discourse analysis

Please find below Tharin Phenwan’s latest published article where he analysed discourses around Future Care Planning in Scottish Government dementia policies.

Article Highlights include:

  • ACP helps individuals discuss and document future care preferences in case of terminal illness or incapacitation.
  • ACP is important to protect the human rights of people with dementia (PwD).
  • ACP uptake among PwD is low due to fluctuating mental capacity, forgetfulness, and lack of appropriate policy guidance.
  • The study used Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis to investigate how Scottish dementia policies influence ACP process for PwD.
  • Policies should define who supports PwD in the ACP process and emphasize the importance of ACP revision to accommodate PwD’s changing needs.
